1 Base Chakra

The First Chakra is called the Base or Root Chakra (Muladhara)

The Base Chakra links us to the physical world, solidity and support – especially to the physical body. It is the foundation of energy and is associated with Personal safety and Security issues. The Base Chakra manifests strongly in the motivation to ensure personal survival by way of food, rest, and sexual expression. When it is in balance we feel safe and secure. We feel good about ourselves and with where we are in life. It is the foundation of physical energy and spiritual energy for the body.

Spiritually, the base chakra has to do with protection of individual integrity. It is an energy centre that provides a solid ground from which to establish our equilibrium in order to ascend to higher awareness.

This chakra symbol represents the most earth centered chakra. It stands for our inherited beliefs through our formative years. Self-preservation, personal survival and our identification with the physical world centres in this bottom most of the main seven chakras.

Zodiac signs Capricorn, Virgo and Taurus

Where it is

The Base Chakra, or Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine and controls the energy for kinaesthetic feeling and movement. Being at the base of the spine and groin area it is classed as being of an animal or base nature.

The Colour of the Base chakra

The colour associated with the Base chakra is red. Red is the symbol of passion, physical life blood and survival.

The Base chakra is associated with adrenals, kidneys, muscles and arterial blood. It is also governs taste and smell and influences all that you stand on (legs, knees, ankles, feet). It rises to the abdomen to meet the sacral chakra, thus also affecting your lower back.

A healthy root chakra connects you with vitality to your family of origin, your immediate society and to the global community.

Symptoms of the Base chakra being out of balance

When it is physically out of balance the symptoms will manifest themselves as lethargy, low levels of activity, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. You may experience lower back pain, or suffer with leg pain or immune system disorders.

When its spiritual energies are out of balance, you will feel flighty, disconnected from reality, and distant. You may begin to doubt your beliefs, stop being loyal to long-term associates and organizations, or find yourself deriving little joy from physical pleasures.

An imbalance will first resonate as a tingle, ache or sensitivity in the regions governed by the base chakra.

Physical/ Medical issues

If the issue is left unattended to, may lead on to more serious issues such as constipation, diarrhoea, Haemorrhoids (piles), colitis, Crohn’s disease, cold fingers and toes, frequency of urination, hypertension (high blood pressure), imbalances with red blood cells, kidney stones, impotence, problems with hips, legs and feet (aching legs). Feeling tired and run down, weight issues (both overweight and underweight). Knee problems, Obesity, Sciatica and Addictions.

If your base chakra is weak, you are more prone to any kind of illness as it effects the balance of all your other chakras.

Base Chakra – Emotional Issues

An imbalance in the base chakra will be caused by lack of safety (being worried about your welfare), lack of security, feelings of self pity, doubting yourself and your abilities, Fear (any strong fear), depression, feeling low. An imbalance will also be created if you dislike how you look or hate certain parts of your body.

It only takes one of these emotional conditions to form an imbalance, the intensity of which will be in direct relation. As you become more aware of yourself and the link between your emotional and physical aspects of you, your body responds more quickly to even the slightest emotional imbalance.

If your 0-7 years were challenging and without love, then this damaged root chakra will function much differently. Issues of survival such as emotional dysfunction, stress, anxiousness, and restlessness will plague you.

You’ll have fears of letting go, scarcity, poor boundaries, and more. It’s during the 0-7 years that we learn about where we fall in our relationships with siblings, parents, our community, and how we relate to them.

Some signs that the Base Chakra is out of balance are:

  • Restlessness
  • Lack of energy
  • Loss of interest in the real world or practical survival
  • Volatile emotions
  • Obsession with one thing
  • Selfishness

What may help improve flow in your Base Chakra.

Crystals with the red, brown, or black color rays are helpful in restoring balance to the Base Chakra. The benefits of just a few minutes a day with one of these crystals resting between the legs for 5 – 10 minutes are substantial. The benefits are enhanced if the crystal therapy is augmented with Yoga positions that focus on the lower back, and with activities that connect you with nature such as hiking, gardening, rock collecting, and physical outdoor games. Affirmation to increase the energy flow

As I focus on this red light that radiates from my base chakra, I know that I am of good health and sound mind. I stand in my strength and in my truth. I forgive myself for neglecting my body in the past. I now love every part of my body, every cell is filled with energy and power.

I no longer judge my beautiful self and I accept my greatness with all that I am. I now choose to have thoughts that add to my life, thoughts of love, compassion, harmony and peace. I sleep in peace, I awaken in bliss and I enjoy living!

(A deep breath in) I lovingly acknowledge, accept and appreciate.

“I am a divine being of light, and I am peaceful, protected and secure”
